McDonald’s has revived its signature McRib sandwich, marking its 45th anniversary with a limited regional launch. The barbecue pork sandwich, featuring a boneless rib-shaped patty with onions and pickles, has since become one of the chain’s most polarizing yet enduring menu items. The initial rollout targets select cities, including Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Atlanta, Philadelphia, and Dallas, according to local reports.
A Rocky Road to Popularity
The McRib’s journey began in Kansas City, where McDonald’s executive chef René Arend developed the sandwich using meat-restructuring technology in collaboration with University of Nebraska food scientist Roger Mandigo. The item was introduced nationally in 1982 but failed to gain traction, leading the company to discontinue it in 1985. A brief revival in 1989 and a tie-in with the 1994 Flintstones movie brought temporary attention, but the sandwich faded again by the late 1990s.
From 2005 to 2007, McDonald’s promoted the McRib as a farewell item, urging fans to cherish it before its retirement. The 2008 launch of an online McRib Locator, created by a devoted fan, allowed customers to track the sandwich’s elusive appearances. In 2010, the company reintroduced the McRib nationwide, celebrating its return with a campaign honoring loyal fans. A 2014 behind-the-scenes video featuring former MythBusters star Grant Imahara showcased how the patties are crafted, addressing ingredient transparency concerns.

Scarcity Drives Demand
The McRib’s cyclical appearances have turned it into a cultural phenomenon. McDonald’s released it nationwide in December 2020 and again in 2021 with a limited-edition NFT promotion. Though the NFT did not endure, the sandwich’s intermittent availability has fueled intense fan engagement. Industry experts Suzanne Cwik of Tibersoft and Art Bell of Kinetic12 note that connecting commercial activity to operator behavior helps manufacturers refine trade investments and marketing strategies.
From Nostalgia to Merchandise
In 2022, McDonald’s launched another farewell tour with commemorative merchandise, only to bring the sandwich back in November 2023. The 2024-25 cycle introduced an edible collectible: a half-gallon jug of McRib sauce, alongside a limited regional appearance in November 2025. These efforts highlight how the McRib transcends a simple menu item, becoming a nostalgic symbol for Gen X and millennials who grew up with its sporadic returns.
